Safe travels with marine radars

Whether you are travelling through a crowded harbour area or enjoy the map-like coastal detail – our marine radars are great equipment for your time off shore. It is also a useful device to go fishing as you can spot seabirds on the radar which will directly lead you to the fish. Furthermore, the marine radar helps big ships to avoid collisions with other ships or obstacles at sea.

How Marine Radars work

The radars are an electronic navigational device with a rotating antenna. This antenna sends microwaves across the water's surface in the surrounding area of the ship and detects any obstacles as they reflect microwaves back to the device. Ship captains have to be able to maneuver their ships in tight areas and under bad weather conditions. Without navigational devices, this would be impossible. Especially, big cruise ships need these radars as they are often in crowded harbour areas. In addition to the system on the ship, there are vessel traffic service radar systems which are shore-based and regulate and monitor the traffic in busy waters.

The navigational power of Marine Radars

Typically, radars are combined with other navigational displays on one single screen. Otherwise, looking at several screens would be too distracting. Thus, by combining some information in one display, it helps captains to safely maneuver the ship at all times. Commercial ships use a full suite of maritime equipment ranging from chartplotters to emergency locators (SART), satellite navigation and other devices. Some devices even have 3D displays and give you a view above, below and around the ship.
